A Boys Ranch endeavors to develop academic, emotional, spiritual, and physical fitness by teaching discipline and coaching them to rebuild relationships. Teens arrive at A Boys Ranch from around the country, including from Iowa City, Iowa, and often find it beneficial to experience a new environment separate from negative peers near home.
Boys ranches are also a residential school with a heart for character maturity and family restoration. We provide treatment to 20 boys in a home-like environment in which troubled adolescents adopt constructive life attitudes, flourish in their belief, find a safe and nurturing environment, and triumph over their challenges and problems. They offset hard work with engaging recreation such as fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting and swimming. Most boys ranches are in a beautiful mountainous or desert location that is a great place for backpacking, camping and hiking.
Each child begins by forming a relationship with an adult mentor. Challenging activities and daily chores foster a solid work ethic and numerous other positive character qualities. Then, in context of a relationship with a mentor, the child can work through the conflicts that had held him or her back. Boys ranches also use individual and group counseling to bring change in attitudes and behaviors.
Boys ranches usually provide a fully accredited education that also offers independent study courses. All credits accumulated transfer easily to any other school. The self-paced nature of the coursework suits our students well, making it possible for them to learn as they do best and catch up on any missed credits. They believe that responsibility and a disciplined life plays a key role in any worthwhile education, and they communicate this in the classroom. In addition, vocational training topics can include automotive, construction, culinary, life skills, and ranching.
Genuine family restoration takes place only with the total commitment of parents. Parents are usually invited to attend family workshops for coaching, family therapy and to visit their child at our facility. We support frequent contact between parents and adolescents using tools such as letter writing, which reinforces communication and relationship building without the emotional charge of face-to-face interaction.
Boys ranches guide adolescents to find their place in life. Through mentorship, counseling, hard work and plenty of play, we stand by values and character traits that will benefit your child all of his or her life. Please think about looking outside of Iowa City, Iowa to see how boys ranches can bring about restoration in your family.
