Compulsive Personality Disorder and Your Son at A Boys Ranch–
We can work with your boy if he has Compulsive Personality Disorder, sometimes called Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder, or OCPD. This is observed as a fixation with perfectionism and control, revealing itself in highly driven (often, first born) children. Your son may not find it easy to be decisive, and be unusually sensitive to critique, struggle with being accommodating or in new situations, as he is compulsively striving for perfection in virtually everything he does. He may show repetitive behaviors (as in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder*) that are beyond his power to stop, be preoccupied with minutiae and rules, or even be a workaholic.
He is likely to toil with his own, as well as perceived expectations of those around him.
Causes are believed to be an interlinking of environmental, genetic factors and unbalanced brain chemistry.
*Note: while sometimes used interchangeably, OCPD is not to be confused with OCD. An OCD sufferer has unwanted thoughts, but an OCPD sufferer believes his thinking to be correct and natural.
Boys ranches – Providing Tools to Help Your Son with Compulsive Personality Disorder.
No blood test can verify your boy’s diagnosis; a professional must determine whether his symptoms and life history meet the criteria. His thinking may be so automatic for him that he does not recognize that he has this problem, possibly not even until his world collapses around him.
Group, individual and long-term psychotherapy can be quite successful in improving his environment, but he is unlikely to be willing to change. Remember that he has not chosen to have these compulsive thoughts and so any judgment, actual or perceived, only increases the stress he already feels. It is important to encourage him, to help him find comfort in new ways of thinking, and accept him, rather than criticize him for his compulsive behaviors.
Support groups are an excellent adjunct, as a means to gain emotional and social support from the community, assuring your son’s autonomy and stability.
Boys ranches – Where Your Troubled Boy Comes for Hope and His Future.
A Boys Ranch is a Christian therapeutic boarding School with a non-threatening, nurturing environment for boys struggling with emotional, academic or behavioral issues. We are here to assist your son in learning to overcome destructive decisions, to attain academic and physical accomplishments, to form Christian values and learn discipline, while learning to view himself as a unique and valuable person.
Is your boy struggling or out of control? Have you seen dramatic changes in his behavior? Boys ranches is here to improve his behavior and life goals, to tackle and conquer his problems, in our structured lifestyle on our 10-acre Montana campus.
We utilize textbooks in our academic courses, and also various non-traditional educational techniques, which are designed to more fully engage your son in his education, employing alternative approaches if he has exhausted the conventional approaches. We provide counseling to deal with issues and struggles, and at the same time believe in time for fun, so he’ll have access to a wide variety of outdoor activities, such as rock climbing, fishing, swimming and horseback riding.
Boys ranches utilizes a positive, incentive-based discipline system that not only teaches consequences for unacceptable behavior and foolish choices, but also fiscal management and responsibility. Your son will learn that that the choices he makes today can change his course, and he’ll face the world better equipped with the skills necessary to succeed in life.
