We are here at A Boys Ranch to help your boy with Borderline Personality Disorder, a mental health illness in which he might show evidence of unusual depth and variation of moods, unrelenting instability in his interpersonal relationships, self-image and demeanor.  Borderline Personality Disorder (also sometimes referred to as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder) might bring about self-loathing, marked change in mood set off by alleged rejection, seclusion or failure.  With BDP, he might be hypersensitive to correction or criticism, and his feelings toward others subject to rapid shifts and changes.  Feelings of unimportance might lead to risky and impulsive behavior.

If he suffers from Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder he is likely to perceive things (or people) in extremes, either perfect or terrible, something (someone) fantastic one day can be appalling the next; very black and white thinking.  This can lead to negligent actions (financially, in food or drug intake, driving or with sex), repeated displays of annoyance or unacceptable anger, self-mutilating or suicidal behavior.

As with many other personality disorders, while the causes for BPD are not established, a combination of environmental and genetic factors, and brain chemistry are thought to be causal contributors.  Higher risk might also come from a close family member who has the disorder, or from childhood abuse or neglect.

Treatment is primarily therapy-based but can be thorny, because there must be a great deal of trust between him and his therapist, something often difficult to achieve because of the swift and extreme mood swings.  Distinctive treatment types might include interpersonal therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic therapy.

Certain medications are sometimes successful, although they are not a normal part of the protocol.

We provide counseling to deal with issues and struggles, and at the same time believe in time for fun, so he’ll have access to a wide variety of outdoor activities, such as rock climbing, fishing, swimming and horseback riding.
