Boys ranches are like therapeutic boarding schools — they are a ranch-based therapeutic residential school with a mission for character growth and family renewal. We provide treatment to 20 boys in a home-like environment in which struggling adolescents develop better life attitudes, flourish in their belief, experience a safe and nurturing environment, and overcome their challenges and problems. They balance hard work with inviting recreation such as fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting and swimming. Boys ranch offer gorgeous locations that are a great place for backpacking, camping and hiking.
A Boys Ranch works hard to encourage academic, emotional, spiritual, and physical fitness by teaching discipline and mentoring them to rebuild relationships. Adolescents come to boys ranches from across the nation, including from Des Moines, Iowa, and often find it beneficial to spend time in a new environment detached from negative peers back home.
Every adolescent begins by forming a relationship with an adult mentor. Strenuous activities and daily chores build a strong work ethic and countless other attractive character qualities. Then, supported by a relationship with a mentor, the teen can overcome the destructive choices that had held him or her back. Boys ranches also use individual and group counseling to improve attitudes and behaviors.
Boys ranches usually provide a fully accredited education that also offers independent study courses. All credits accumulated transfer easily to any other school. The self-paced nature of the coursework suits the students well, permitting them to learn in the way they find best and catch up on any missed credits. They believe that responsibility and a disciplined life plays a key role in any successful education, and we convey this in our classroom. In addition, vocational training topics can include automotive, construction, culinary, life skills, and ranching.
True family restoration occurs only with the full cooperation of parents. Parents are usually invited to attend family workshops each year for coaching, family therapy and to visit their teen on our campus. They facilitate frequent contact between parents and their children using tools such as letter writing, which reinforces communication and relationship building without the emotional charge of face-to-face contact.
We are a faith-based program that leads adolescents to find their place in life. Through mentorship, counseling, hard work and plenty of play, they believe in building good character that will serve your child into adulthood. Please consider looking outside of Des Moines, Iowa to see how boys ranches can bring about restoration in your family.
